The Khmer Rouge

Poem: Day of Deception

This is a poem that has been written to express the feelings of Cambodians under the rule of the repressive CPK.  It shows the toll of living in a society where people are murdered constantly, people are over worked, and starvation runs rampant can have on a human.  Another purpose of this is to get the reader to put themselves in the position of these people, and realize the harsh truth.

Day of Deception

How has this happened?
Your family is gone,
And what you once relied on
Has now disappeared.

Where can you run?
When everyone you're with
Dies one by one,
And if you fight back
it will happen to you.

What can you do?
When one simple mistake
Can lead to the unspeakable,
A slow and painful fate.

What if you died?
Would anyone notice
An emptiness
In the place you once were?

Who can you trust?
When they all have changed
To a person so different
That they seem foreign
To your very own eyes.

What can be done,
In this day of deception?
